How to grow onions and garlic

Optimal Consumption:

To maximize the benefits, consuming onions raw or lightly cooked is recommended, as high temperatures can compromise some of the nutrients. Incorporate raw onions into salads or sandwiches for enhanced flavor and texture. For garlic, raw consumption delivers the most benefits, making it ideal for salads, sauces, marinades, and vinaigrettes. Adding garlic towards the end of cooking preserves its flavor and properties.

Growing Onions and Garlic at Home:

For those who appreciate fresh, organic produce, growing onions and garlic at home is a satisfying endeavor. Surprisingly, you can repurpose discarded polystyrene packages for this purpose.

Start by saving polystyrene boxes, especially those with lids. Mark measurements using plastic caps and cut out the polystyrene using a cutter. With the halves separated, trim the roots of small onions and cut the tips. Repeat the process with garlic.

Place the cut part of the roots into the holes made in the polystyrene and use the other half as a water saucer. Within a day, you’ll observe new roots and green shoots emerging from the onions and garlic. After about 5 days, when the roots have grown, transfer them to a larger polystyrene box with drainage holes and soil.

Plant the onion bulbs about 2.5 cm deep and 10 cm apart, ensuring regular watering to maintain soil moisture without excessive wetness. With this simple yet effective method, you can enjoy home-grown onions and garlic, adding a delightful touch to your culinary endeavors.
