Soil plays a crucial role in plant growth by providing physical support, retaining and supplying water, and providing a primary source of essential nutrients. This is why it is important to take care of it and add some natural ingredients to increase its fertility.

Soil is essential for plant growth , as it provides physical support for roots and retains the water needed for their development.

It is the primary source of essential nutrients and hosts microorganisms that contribute to the decomposition of organic matter and nutrient cycling, maintaining a stable chemical environment favorable to plant growth.

When a soil is fertile, therefore, it means that it has the characteristics necessary to support healthy and vigorous growth of plants:

  • has an abundant supply of essential nutrients (such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium) and micronutrients, necessary for plant metabolism and development;
  • it has a good physical structure that allows for proper drainage and water retention;
  • it is able to promote the aeration essential for the roots to breathe;
  • there is the presence of organic matter, which improves the soil’s ability to retain water and nutrients.

Fertilizing the soil of plants therefore means introducing a series of elements into it so that these conditions are respected and the result is soil capable of producing healthy and luxuriant plants .

Obviously, this process can be achieved without problems with  natural ingredients that we have available at home, without necessarily having to purchase industrial products that have a significant impact on the environment .

How to increase soil fertility

Required materials

  • Ripe banana
  • Waterfall
  • Pebbles
  • Sand
  • Soil

Procedure

  1. First, put some of the banana seeds in water and create a sort of mush.
  2. Then also extract other seeds from the pulp.
  3. Start creating layers in the pot, so alternate pebbles, potting soil, banana and sand.
  4. Moisten the surface of the soil and wrap it in a bag.
  5. Let it sit overnight and then plant whatever you like.

Important nutrients for soil

The most important nutrients that should be present in plant soil are: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; known as primary macronutrients.

Nitrogen is essential for leaf growth and photosynthesis, phosphorus is essential for root development and flowering, while potassium helps with water regulation and disease resistance.

Other important nutrients include: calcium, magnesium and sulfur; considered secondary macronutrients.

There are also other substances, included in micronutrients, which are necessary in smaller quantities but essential for the healthy growth of plants.

Among these we find:

  • iron
  • manganese
  • zinc
  • copper
  • chlorine

Other natural fertilizers

When it comes to fertilizing the soil, the variety of natural ingredients that can contribute is truly vast! In fact, in some cases they are real waste that we normally produce in the kitchen and that promptly end up in the waste bin.

Here are some examples:

  1. Coffee grounds : Coffee grounds are rich in nitrogen and can improve soil structure. They also attract earthworms, which are great for soil health;
  2. Eggshells : Eggshells are an excellent source of calcium. Crushed and  added to the soil , they help improve soil structure and prevent health problems in several crops;
  3. Fruit and Vegetable Scraps : Fruit and vegetable peels are rich in nutrients and you can bury them directly into the soil to improve organic matter and provide nutrients to plants;
  4. Ash: Wood ash contains potassium and calcium, which are good for soil fertility. Use sparingly as it can increase soil pH;
  5. Onion or Garlic Peels : Onion and garlic peels contain nutrients and beneficial compounds that can help improve soil health and repel certain pests.
