Five tips to care for your poinsettia and prepare it for the holidays.
The poinsettia, better known as “ Poinsettia ”, is a perfect plant for this time of year as its characteristic red flowers contribute to the Christmas spirit.
In order to grow healthy, lush and strong, this plant requires special care due to its characteristics .
So let’s look at the 5 things you should know about poinsettia care .
- Water : This is a plant that doesn’t like water very much, so it’s not advisable to give it too much: its roots could rot. Water it once a week or every other day with very little water. It’s better if you check the soil before watering to make sure it’s not too wet yet.
- Soil : As with many other plants, it is important to give the poinsettia a soil that is very permeable (which therefore favors the drainage of excess water).
- Light and temperature : The poinsettia is a plant that loves heat (about 15/20 degrees) and instead does not tolerate direct sunlight. It is therefore advisable to expose it to the sun for only a few hours and not when the temperature is too high.
- Fertilizer : Enrich the soil where your poinsettia is located with the fertilizer you prefer, preferably compost or otherwise organic. This way you will have all the nutrients you need. It is advisable to add it once a month.
- Color: The leaves of this plant are usually green. Paradoxically, to obtain the characteristic red color that characterizes it and makes it perfect for the Christmas holidays, this plant needs darkness. In fact, the lack of light causes the chlorophyll of its leaves to take on its beautiful vermilion shades. So, from October onwards, keep your plant in the dark for 14-16 hours a day.
