Brewer’s yeast is an essential ingredient for making sweet and savory dough, but it has a short shelf life. If brewer’s yeast deteriorates and is therefore no longer valid, its color will change from a pleasant beige to a pale gray, or mold-like spots may appear on its surface. If you observe these changes, the brewer’s yeast will no longer be suitable for your culinary preparations. However, it may not show any visible changes. In this case, you can check its validity by dissolving it in a glass of warm water (not hot, as this would kill it) with a teaspoon of sugar.

If the brewer’s yeast has expired, it cannot be used in cooking but it should not be thrown away. In fact, even if expired, it retains a series of nutrients that are excellent for plants : it can therefore be used to make a fertilizer .
