The experience of growing tomatoes using the famous Maslov Method has been going on for over 40 years. This method is often confused with the technology of transplanting overgrown seedlings, but they are different from each other.
Igor Mikhailovich Maslov became known to people in the 80s, when one of the magazines published an article about his experiment on the plot, where he achieved incredible results. He was able to collect 70 kg of tomato harvest of the varieties “De-Barao” and “Teplichny” from each bush, while preserving all the useful qualities of tomatoes.
In order to achieve these indicators, Maslov used methods based on the ability of tomatoes to form so-called aerial roots, and when the stem contacts the ground, additional roots. Now many will say that this is already known, because deepening and hilling tomatoes is a common practice. However, this method has certain nuances that are innovations.
An engineer from Kaliningrad observed the growth of seedlings and noticed that when the bush was planted in open ground in a horizontal position, rather than vertically, the tomatoes developed a fairly powerful root system.
Small seals on the lower part of the stems represent an underdeveloped root system. When favorable conditions are created, including sufficient water and direct contact with the ground, the roots are activated, fully develop and provide tomatoes with additional nutrition, stimulating rapid formation and ripening of fruits.
The basic principles of the method are correct planting. The seedlings should be healthy, strong and larger than the usual seedlings used by gardeners. The thickness of the stem affects the future roots. A strong and thick stem guarantees good roots. It is best to use tall varieties.
To plant tomatoes using this method, you need to dig a trench 10 cm deep. Then we lay the tomato bush, removing all the leaves except the very top ones. And here is the most important point – the top of the stem should be directed to the north, and the roots – to the south! The crown will always strive for the sun and will soon straighten up.
This method has its advantages and disadvantages. Among the advantages, it is possible to note the use of the natural potential of tomatoes and the development of additional roots, which provides more nutrition and water for plants. Practice shows that the yield of tall tomatoes increases 10 times, and low-growing ones – 3 times. In addition, to obtain a large number of fruits, fewer seedlings are required.
However, the method has some disadvantages. Tomatoes grown using this method take up more space. Due to the large number of fruits on the bush, the size of the tomatoes may be smaller, and accordingly their pulp and juice. The first tomatoes, forming close to the ground, may have an unmarketable appearance and are sometimes subject to rotting. In addition, a special approach to watering and fertilizing plants is required.
It is important to remember that Maslov’s method requires careful execution of all stages and strict adherence to recommendations. If everything is done correctly, you will be able to enjoy a rich and high-quality tomato harvest.
